Jack Dorsey, founder of financial technology company Block, Inc. has announced the launch of the Bitcoin Academy in Brooklyn, working with rapper Jay Z. The Bitcoin Academy’s mission is to empower and educate the community. The project’s website further details that residents of Mercy House in Brooklyn, New York, will receive free courses and other perks like internet data plans.

Jack Dorsey, former CEO and co-founder of Twitter and founder of Block Inc. announced Thursday that he is partnering with popular rap artist Jay Z (Shawn Carter) to launch theBitcoin Academy.
“Mr. [Shawn Carter] and I are funding The Bitcoin Academy, a program for residents of Marcy Houses in Brooklyn New York where Jay grew up,” Dorsey tweeted. . The block’s founder further explained that the project was also enhanced by Crypto Blockchain Plug (Najah J. Roberts) and Black Bitcoin Billionaire (Lamar Wilson).
The Mercy House or Mercy Project is a public housing project in Brooklyn, New York. Jay Z lived there on Mercy Avenue as a child and attended Eli Whitney High School. Dorsey continued in a Twitter thread, “Bitcoin is becoming an important tool for many in Africa and Latin America.” Our goal is to prove that by making powerful tools more available to people, we can build greater self-reliance.” The block executive added,
Education is where we start. This is not just about Bitcoin. It’s about long-term thinking, the local economy, and confidence. The course is free to all Mercy residents, including children. And to make it even easier, we offer devices and data plans for all who need it.

The Bitcoin Academy website notes that “education is power” and Classes will be offered online or in-person from June 22 through September 7.” All Mercy residents are welcome,” the website elaborates.” In-person classes will be held twice a week in the evenings and dinner will be provided.”
If needed, Mercy residents can access MiFi devices, a one-year data plan, and they can keep their devices. The Bitcoin Academy will also focus on youth, with a “Crypto Kids Camp” for kids ages 5-17 scheduled for Saturday. The website also reveals that Jay-Z’s nonprofit Shawn Carter Foundation will also be helping out.
