“Sometimes a click is more important than the truth.”
The New York Times (NYT) has come under fire on social media for publishing a one-sided article to promote propaganda, with several well-known bitcoin supporters claiming that the Times lacked journalistic integrity and was accused of speaking for the establishment. In mid-November 2022, the magazine was accused of writing a “puff piece” about former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF) and inviting him to speak at the company’s Dealbook Summit event. on April 10, NYT’s Gabriel Dance reporter published an editorial titled “The Real-World Cost of the Digital Race Over Bitcoin.”
In hisop-ed, Dance focuses on bitcoin mining in the United States, claiming that 85% of U.S.-based miners use fossil fuels for energy. He also mentions 34 bitcoin mines in Texas and the region, and although Dance misspells the name of one of the Texas bitcoin mines, Bitdeer, his findings indicate that bitcoin mining is not environmentally friendly and “in some areas, this has led to price spikes has caused the price to rise,” he points out. Despite the author’s claims, however, some bitcoin enthusiasts have denounced the article as propaganda. Dennis Porter, CEO and co-founder of the Satoshi Act Fund, was one of the critics of the Times article.
“The NYT hit piece was dropped and it is everything we expected…It is sad to see the NYT attack bitcoin mining. Sometimes clicks are more important than the truth.” In another tweet, Porter emphasized that “the NYT couldn’t even take the time to fact-check the towns where bitcoin mining is taking place.” It’s not Rockland, it’s Rockdale, Texas. They are not serious people,” headded
Alex Gladstein, chief strategy officer of the Human Rights Foundation, also criticized the NYT article for failing to mention the benefits of bitcoin. Do you think this article is one-sided or do you think it accurately portrays the issue at hand? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
