El Salvador’s “New Land of Freedom” campaign, calling for migration with bitcoin as legal tender
President Naib Bukele has called for migration to El Salvador. Bucheret posted a vintage American-style poster, depicting a classic American family in their living room, calling his country “the new land of freedom,” a motto that usually applies to the United States
The poster, according to him, shows the achievements of his government, mainly in the areas of security and monetary policy. The poster describes the results of the strict security measures taken by the government in 2022 and 2023 as “no fentanyl crisis,” “no shootings,” and “no looting,” and encourages people to move to El Salvador.
The posters also showcase El Salvador’s adoption of Bitcoin as legal tender, making El Salvador the first country in the world to offer this option to tourists and residents. President Buquere has also proposed granting Salvadoran citizenship with bitcoininvestmentand made statements easing the path of immigration.
Achievements in Criticism
The poster seems to celebrate the new face that Buquere brought to El Salvador, clearly comparing him to the U.S. icon of the 1960s. Buchere has been heavily criticized for possible human rights violations in his fight against gangs, but he has prioritized security in the country. According to the report, El Salvadorended 2022 with a 56.8% sharp drop in homicide rates. Bucherealso celebrated a milestone of 300 days without a homicide on February 14,
But to get to this point, Bucherer had to establish a state of exception that imposed a curfew on its residents while wagingall-out warwith the nation’s largest gang, the Maras Salvatruchas, since March 2022.
The posters also promote the great weather and beaches. Buchelet had previously said that the country’s tourism industry, the fastest in the world to recover after the Covid 19 pandemic, was thanks in part to the incorporation of Bitcoin into the country’s economy and in part to surfing.
Buchere has also announced significant investments in landmark beaches like El Zonte, known as Bitcoin Beach due to its adoption. In August, the Salvadoran government announced a $203 million investment to build support infrastructure for the area, including a new drainage system, bridges, and bike paths destined to invest $203 million.
