In about 65 days, Ethereum’s long-awaited proof-of-work (PoW) to proof-of-stake (PoS) transition known as The Merge could be implemented. This information was shared by “a planning timeline” on Twitter, which noted that the PoW to PoS transition could take place on September 19. The source originated from Superphiz, community director of the Ethereum Beacon chain, who further emphasized that The Merge “timeline isn’t final” and people should “look out for official announcements” He stated that.
Ethereum Beacon Chain Community Director Superphiz shared a “planned timeline” specifying a date for The Merge
Ethereum (ETH)supporters and the crypto community in general have been waiting a long time for developers to complete the transition from PoW to the PoS consensus model. During this waiting period, there were several changes to the network that allowed for a smoother transition. For example, part of the merge process began with the implementation of the network’sbeacon chain. Implementation of theBeacon Chain
began, an Ethereum PoS chain that runs in parallel with the Ethereum PoW chain. The
Beacon chain shipped on December 1, 2020.24} Statistics for ETH 2.0 contractsshow that there are approximately 13.1 millionETHlocked today. ether using the PoS system. To stake, a deposit of 32is required. To start the staking process, a deposit of 32 ETHis required, and at the time of this writing, there are395,762 validators.
Once The Merge is officially implemented, PoW miners using the Ethash algorithm will be forced to mine another blockchain, such as Ethereum Classic (ETC). Despite these looming changes, Ethereum miners have continued to dedicate hash rates toward theETHnetwork; the hash rate for the ETH network reached an all-time high on June 4 with a block high of 14,902,285. On that day, the hash rate reached 1,320 tera hashes per second (TH/s) or 1.32 peta hashes per second (PH/s).
Today, the global Ethereum hash rate is low, coasting at 968.75 TH/s according to the coinwarz.comindex. At about the same time 13 million ETHwas deposited into the ETH 2.0 contract at about the same time 13 millionETHwas deposited into theETH 2.0 contract, the Ethereum developer has been working on a Gray Glacier update that will allow the network to decided to delay the difficulty level explosion.
This decision meant that The Merge would not happen until September 2022, despite prior hints that it might happen in August. On Thursday, Superphiz, the Ethereum Beacon Chain Community Director, shared what he called a “planned timeline” on Twitter, and said it is something he thinks is “very exciting” to see come together.
The timeline Superphiz shared on Twitter includes release dates for certain clients and dates when the so-called The Merge will happen. Despite the dates, Superphiz also stated that “this merge timeline is not final,” and the developer further stressed that people should “consider this a planning timeline and watch for an official announcement.” PoS Implementers’ Call #91 – 2022- Thedocumentcalled “07-14” states that the “proposed” timeline for discussion would be as follows.
- Goerli/Prater clients will be released on July 27 or 28.
- announced on the 28th/29th.
- Prater Bellatrix on August 8
- Goerli Merge on August 11
- ACD 18 planned mainnet Merge:
- Bellatrix early September,
- merge two weeks later (week of September 19).

Many ethereum supporters “liked” Superphiz’s tweet, with one individualwriting. “Great timing if true.” Ethereum developerTim Beiko also respondedto Superphiz’s tweet with a screenshotof a comment he made on the Research and Development (R&D) Discord server. In the
screenshot, one person wrote:” So we have an extremely soft and changeable target, the Goerli merge of August 11 and the mainnet merge of [week] September 19.” Beiko responded on the R&D Discord server as follows:” If I were using textures, I would say to treat Goerli as aged cheddar (not parmesan) and Mainnet as burrata.”
For now, The Merge could happen on September 19, 2022, when Ethereum will finally transition from a PoW model to a full PoS network. Of course, it is possible that The Merge will not occur on the date specified in the planning timeline and the transition from PoW to PoS will be delayed.
