Playboy Enters Sandbox
PLBY Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: PLBY), commonly referred to asPlayboyannounced Monday that it is collaborating with blockchain projectThe Sandbox. Launched in March 2012, The Sandbox platform has evolved from a two-dimensional (2D) game to a three-dimensional (3D) metaverse powered by Ethereum.
Playboy’s announcement revealed a licensing collaboration with The Sandbox, which the company noted will allow users to immerse themselves in a “Metamansion.” Created by The Sandbox, Metamansion will feature non-fossil token (NFT) collectibles, programmed events, social play, and a game experience using Playboy’s content library.
Lifestyle and entertainment companies have been part of the blockchain industry for quite some time; in March 2018, the company’s Playboy TV revealed it would release a multi-cryptocurrency wallet, but according to a report published four months later, the project fell through.
In April 2021, Playboy revealed it would work with Nifty Gateway to publish an NFT collection called “Liquid Summer.” The following July, the entertainment company joined forces with Super Rare to publish the Miami Beach NFT collection. This collaboration with The Sandbox will offer an “exclusive experience for the NFT and Playboy’s Rabbitar community.”
“We are excited to work with The Sandbox and its best-in-class design and development team to build a premium, customized Playboy gaming and social experience in the Metaverse,” Playboy chief brand and strategy officer Rachel Webber explained in a note sent to Bitcoin.com News.” We can’t wait to invite our global Playboy fan base, especially our Rabbitar community and The Sandbox LAND owners, into this new immersive world of Playboy.”
Playboy is one of many brands that have joined The Sandbox metaverse within the last year; on May 19, Bitcoin.com News reported that acid jazz-funk band Jamiroquai is collaborating with the Web3 virtual world. The Sandbox also partnered with gaming giants Square Enix and Ubisoft to bring Dungeon Siege IP and Rabbids to Blockchain Gaming Land.
Playboy has been a pioneer in the publishing space for nearly 70 years, and the company believes the blockchain world The Sandbox will “provide a dynamic platform for the next wave of innovation.” the Sandbox COO and co-founder Sebastien Borget said the entertainment company continues to appeal to all generations and current Web3 users.
“Playboy is iconic for its appeal, lifestyle, and cross-generational entertainment content, and it has already stepped into Web3 with early success.” Borget noted during Monday’s announcement.
