Several companies are now interested in how the metaverse could become part of our lives in the near future. Unity, a company that specializes in providing real-time 3D solutions, predicts that by 2030 most of the Internet will be metaverse-based. The company’s CEO John Riccitello said that 2D websites will mutate into metaverse-like destinations and they will become interconnected. The CEO made his remarks last week in a keynote speechat AWE, an augmented reality event.

He predicts that there will be basically three types of web destinations. First, sites that are fully integrated into the metaverse and are perceived as a “lived-in” place; second, those that merge real-world locations with augmentations; and third, those that augment, but only “overlap a bit on top of today’s world.”

These metaverse experiences can be fully enjoyed with sufficient hardware, but they must also be adapted to less capable hardware such as PCs and cell phones.

Real-Time 3D Experiences and Metaverse

Unity’s CEO also commented on the importance of real-time in these metaverse. This means that each interaction in these worlds is experienced only when it happens, unlike a movie where the interaction is always the same.

This is where real-time engine providers come in, giving designers the tools to create and enhance these metaverse experiences; Riccitiellosaid in an interview that more than 50% of real-time 3D experiences in the market are Riccitiello has stated in an interview that more than 50% of the real-time 3D experiences in the market are built using Unity productsand the company’s recent acquisitionssuch as Ziva Dynamics and the acquisition of Weta Digitalare aimed at further improving the company’s technology and adding more immersive experiences to its real-time products.

Unity is not the only real-time engine company interested in the metaverse. Unreal Engine 5, developed by direct competitor Epic Games, is also acompetitor. It aims to provide high quality worlds and interactions for metaverse applications.
