On April 29, photography-focused tech startup Picture This will finally launch NFT White Bear, which raises awareness and money to fight climate change and the impact humans are having on our planet.
Since the beginning of the decade, digital art sales and popularity have skyrocketed. The minting of artwork in the form of NFTs has allowed artists to reach audiences in ways that were previously unattainable. Now the photographic community is finally entering the NFT space.
One devoted fan is Christian Hauge. For decades, the artist’s dramatic photography has generated a strong emotional response in international museums and art institutions such as the California Museum of Photography, the Paris Auction, the Three Shades Center for Photographic Art in Beijing, etc. This week, Huguet is officially moving his world-renowned art from the walls of galleries to blockchain.
– At first I was naturally skeptical of NFT art, being an “old school” analog photographer who had worked for years to complete his climate-related projects. I am interested in new technologies, even if they are a double-edged sword in so-called human progress. I see it as a Faustian bargain. It gives and takes away, so it’s even more important to be conscious of not losing ourselves and the nature within us. Personally, I find NFT fascinating because this technology is not going to get us anywhere. It will change the way we work and communicate. Conscious NFT with storytelling and provoking feelings is important in a web3 environment, says Christian Houge.
Environmentally responsible art
For Hauge’s official NFT debut, the artist is releasing an unseen work, “White Bear,” from his “Abode of Impermanence” series, in collaboration with photo tech startup Picture This. For the past ten years, Hauge has devoted his life to collecting rare trophy animals so that he can then fire off a large taxidermy collection against a backdrop of traditional British wallpaper, which for Hauge embodies imperialism. The “Residence of Impermanence” series emphasizes how man cruelly exploits nature, causing us to consider ourselves superior to all living things.
With this drop, NFT Houge is contributing to the conservation of wildlife and forests in Paca, Brazil through the Pacajai REDD+ project with partner Offsetra. This is part of the Picture This impact program to offset NFT’s carbon footprint. Proceeds from the sales will be donated to Earth.Org to support the development of Earth.Org’s global ecosystem of photographers, NGO partners and global ambassadors, as well as its activities. Houge NFTs goal is to raise awareness of climate change and human impact on the planet, and to promote hope and solutions to build a better future.
The NFT “Polar Bear,” priced at 0.5 ETH, will be the first piece in the seven-piece Residence of Impermanence collection. Collectors of this unrivaled work of art will receive priority access to the rest of the collection, which will be released at a later date. The collection also consists of exclusive behind-the-scenes footage of the burning of seven rare animals, with each animal represented as a completely unique NFT. The photographs, considered masterpieces of the project, will be released in an edition of five copies.
All Residence of Impermanence collectors will have the privilege of meeting the artist in person, as well as continued priority access to all upcoming Houge exhibitions.
