Over the past few years, crypto-assets have spread rapidly among individuals and businesses. It’s no longer uncommon to treat yourself to a delicious meal or buy yourself a new pair of sneakers and pay for it with cryptocurrency. Blockchain-based payment technology has come a long way, and its simplicity is astounding. The increasing use of cryptocurrencies in real life has brought this new form of payment one step closer to the mainstream.

The famous airline company Fast Private Jet recently published an interesting study about the best cryptocurrency cities in the world. Surprisingly, the best crypto-friendly destinations were mostly located in Europe, and the first place of the best crypto-friendly city in Europe went to Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia.

Ahead of other most cryptocurrency-friendly cities such as Vienna, Rome, Madrid and Prague, Ljubljana took first place as the most cryptocurrency-friendly destination with over 137 businesses and 584 different locations accepting payments with digital coins and tokens.

Indeed, Slovenia boasts an astounding 1,333 crypto-friendly bars and restaurants, stores and sports venues that accept crypto payments. The backbone of this futuristic payment method is the GoCrypto network, developed in 2018 by Slovenian company Eligma.

In just four years GoCrypto has become the fastest growing cryptocurrency payment network in the world. Present in 69 countries and with at least one active presence in 32 of those countries, GoCrypto is available in more than 80,000 locations (physical and online) to more than 150 million users. The crypto network is also integrated into Eligma’s comprehensive payment solution, the Elly POS terminal, as one of its many payment methods.

The GoCrypto network, operating in Europe’s most crypto-friendly city, is available in segments ranging from automotive, sports and electronics to entertainment, retail, hospitality and travel.

The history of cryptopayments in Slovenia began in Ljubljana’s largest shopping district, conveniently called BTC City. BTC joined forces with the GoCrypto team and offered its merchants a comprehensive test environment to accept cryptocurrency payments. Retailers have shown great interest in the innovative payment approach, which is now available in more than 100 BTC locations. The first cryptopayment was conducted in April 2018 at Atlantis Water City. To date, cryptopayment usage has grown by nearly 900%. With its GoCrypto payment system, ATMs for exchanging fiat (euro) and cryptocurrencies, and its own blockchain and startup community, BTC City is turning its business into the world’s first bitcoin city of its kind.

Business owners can integrate the GoCrypto payment network into their POS system and start accepting cryptocurrency payments immediately, with no additional knowledge of cryptocurrencies. Their customers can choose from the two largest cryptocurrency wallet providers Binance Pay and Bitcoin.com Wallet, or Eligma’s own Elly Wallet, which was specifically designed to support all aspects of the GoCrypto network. All three together support over 50 different cryptocurrencies.

And the best part is that merchants can avoid all the risks of cryptocurrency volatility if they choose to settle in local currency. This means they can accept cryptocurrency and settle in euros if they so choose.

Cryptocurrency destinations have become popular with travelers around the world. Ljubljana was named Europe’s top destination of 2022 and has now been named Europe’s best crypto-friendly city as well, and the Slovenian capital is sure to be one of the most visited cities in the coming years.
