The first ever “Pragma” summit landed in Tokyo
On April 13, ethereum proponents from around the world gathered at the Digital Garage in Shibuya, Tokyo, for on-stage interviews, product announcements, and networking. The application-only. pragmaevent, billed as ETHGlobal’s first in-person version of such a summit, kicked off the ETHGlobal Tokyo hackathon, which continues through Sunday, April 16.
Kartik Talwar, co-founder ofETHGlobalwas invited to begin a series of interviews withAya MiyaguchiMr. Ethereum, Executive Director of the Ethereum Foundation, took the stage.
Miyaguchi commented on the general culture in Japan, saying that people are very humble and that “there are many talented developers, but it is not well accepted. But it is not accepted enough. In a company, management makes decisions and tells developers what to make. She emphasized:
But the way Ethereum does it, you have to include these developers in the ideation and brainstorming phase.
Miyaguchi added, “One of the things Japan is good at …… teamwork,” he noted. The executive director said that this is a real strength, and that while the Japanese are eager to learn new things like programming languages, events like hackathons and the Ethereum community “teach and inspire” new ways of openness that lie outside of traditional cultural constraints.
Juan Benet of Protocol Labsspoke about creating, IPFS, archival storage on blockchains, stating future possibilities for various blockchain transformations:
My guess is that most of these chains will be recombined in super interesting ways… Some L1 (layer 1) will turn into L2, some L2 will turn into L1 and it won’t matter so much in the long run.
He noted that blockchain should be able to scale much more than people think, saying that “scaling laws work,” citing similar structures that already exist.
“Today, we still have 10 people reaching out
He also revealed why he made the now famous $1 million bitcoin bet, citing the current global financial turmoil:
More on this bet soon. I think there will be an update … and of course, it will be satisfactory to all of you. The reason I did it is to call your attention to this crisis.
Product Announcement
In between interviews, Pragma participants listened to talks and watched presentations on several product announcements. Presentations included Masa ‘Senshi’ Kikuchi of Secured Finance, Lukas Schor of Safe, Harsh Rajat of Push Protocol, and Jason Goldberg of Airstack.
