Project Worldcoin, founded by Sam Altman, also co-founder of artificial intelligence (AI) startup Openai, has announced the launch of a digital, human identity protocol World ID, the company announced today. The protocol provides AI-independent proof of humanity online by scanning and verifying each person’s iris using a device called an orb.
World Coin launches iris-based World ID Humanity Verification System to counter AI
Worldcoin, a cryptocurrency token project co-founded by Openai co-founder Sam Altman, has launched,World ID, an AI-friendly protocol that enables online human identity verification through iris scans
The project states that it will enable a non-governmental Universal Basic Income (UBI) obtained by AI means and distributed through digital currency, and with the rise of AI models that can pass or nearly pass the Turing test, to determine the “humanness” of a being’s He argues that the rise of AI models that can pass or nearly pass the Turing test has determined the need for more innovative protocols for determining the “humanness” of beings.
World ID, a protocol that uses zero-knowledge proofs in relation to biometric data provided by a user’s iris, is Worldcoin’s proposal to confront these new challenges Wordcoin argues that this protocol is private, self-sovereign, decentralized type, and states that users can control the use of their identity data and protect the distribution of resources.
The protocol also releases software for builders to start experimenting with, and says it will be served as a “public utility.” Its use will be enabled by “giving ownership to individuals, regardless of nationality or background, to accelerate the transition to a future that welcomes and benefits everyone on the planet.
Enter the Orb
”
But because the protocol is biometric, a new hardware device needed to be built, in partnership withTools Of Humanitya technology company, World Coin Inc. introduced Orb, an iris scanning device needed for effective implementation of World ID.
The Orbis an open source hardware device designed to capture the iris of users of the World ID protocol, which Worldcoin says has been years in the making. The device has two cameras, a wide-angle camera and a telephoto camera, and works in conjunction with a neural network to capture high-resolution images of the iris.
Production of the Divide is already underway, and World Coin has already distributed the device to several registry operators around the world. The project, which is currently in beta phase, aims to launch during the first half of 2023.
