Acclaimed Hollywood actor Matt Damon has revealed how he became involved in the creation of the cryptocurrency commercial “Fortune Favors the Brave” with Crypto.com. Following the release of the crypto ad, Damon faced worldwide criticism for his involvement.
Matt Damon talks about the crypto commercial
Renowned actor and producer Matt Damon spoke with the Associated Press on Wednesday about how he became involved with crypto exchange platform Crypto.com and the creation of cryptocurrency ads. The Oscar-winning actor is best known for his roles in films such as “Good Will Hunting,” “Saving Private Ryan,” and the “Bourne” franchise.
“The story behind that for me personally is that Water.org was having a down year, so I did that commercial to raise money for Water.org.” The famous actor said, and added:
Water.org went down, so I donated my entire salary to Water.org. Crypto.com heard about it and donated $1 million to Water.org… All by themselves. So I definitely have a lot of gratitude for them and for what they have done for our foundation.
Water.org is a global nonprofit organization that Damon co-founded to bring safe water and sanitation to those in need.
Crypt.com has released a commercial, “Fortune Favors the Brave,” featuring Damon in October 2021. It was directed by Oscar winner Wally Fister.
However, the commercial drew much criticism. Some claimed that the ad, which presented cryptocurrency as a safe and easy way to make money, was misleading, while others criticized it for promoting investment in an unstable and unregulated market. Still others speculated that Damon participated in the ad simply to profit and that he did not genuinely believe in the benefits of cryptocurrencies.
In 2021 and 2022, many cryptocurrency companies actively promoted their businesses. According to data consulting firm Kantar, crypto companies spent a combined$39 millionto buy Super Bowl spots in 2022. Among the crypto companies with celebrity-featured commercials was the now-defunct crypto exchange FTX, which featured Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen in its ads.
