Governor Ron DeSantis proposes legislation to prevent CBDC from “weaponizing” finance
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis on Monday introduced a “comprehensive bill” to protect the state’s consumers and businesses “from the Biden administration’s weaponization of the financial sector by the Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC).”
Governor DeSantis warned.
the Biden administration’s attempt to inject digital currency into the central bank for oversight and control.
He further stated that the bill will protect the state’s consumers and businesses “from the reckless adoption of ‘centralized digital dollars’ that stifle innovation and promote government-sanctioned surveillance.” The Governor also noted that CBDC is not the same as decentralized cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin (BTC
The legislation would prohibit federally adopted central bank digital currencies from being used as money within Florida’s Uniform Commercial Code (UCC), the announcement details, adding that it would also prohibit CBDCs issued by foreign reserve banks or foreign-licensed central banks.
Tarren Bragdon, CEO of the Foundation for Government Accountability, noted that the proposal would push back against an “overreaching federal government,” elaborating.
Our money says In God We Trust. The central bank’s digital currency is changing it to In Government We Trust. This is a mistake and we thank the Governor for his continued push against the out-of-control DC bureaucracy.
Earlier this month, South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem vetoed a bill that would have paved the way for CBDC while disallowing the use of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies as a form of currency, disguised as an update to UCC guidelines. She urged the 20 other states, including Florida, that are considering similar legislation to “stop this bill from being passed.”
Like Noem, Governor DeSantis has also called on other states to fight back against the updated UCC guidelines that pave the way for CBDC. In an announcement on Monday, DeSantis called on “like-minded states to join Florida in fighting back against this concept nationally by adopting similar prohibitions in their respective commercial laws.”
Noting that “a central bank digital currency is the cornerstone of the federal government’s ability to track every single transaction that happens in the world,” State Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis stressed.
