Samsung Is Preparing Its Own Metaverse Hardware in Partnership With Google and Qualcomm

Korean electronics company Samsung has revealed that it is working on building its own metaverse and augmented reality device, suggesting that it may soon launch a VR headset. TM Roh, head of Samsung’s mobile experience business, stated that the device will be built in partnership with Google and Qualcomm.

Samsung to Enter Metaverse Hardware Business

South Korean mobile company Samsung has revealed that it will soon enter themetaverse and virtual reality (VR) headset market. The company announced that it is already working on what it calls “augmented reality” hardware and hinted at production of VR headsets.

TM Roh, head of Samsung’s mobile experience business, confirmed that such a device is in development, but did not mention when the hardware would be available. He did, however, report that fabless chipmakers Qualcomm and Google are involved as partners; on February 1, Roh told the Washington Post.

Ro explained that Samsung delayed its market entry because the market was not yet ready and other similar devices launched by competitors did not have the expected success.

Other VR Devices

Samsung joins the ranks of manufacturers that have already launched metaverse devices, such as Meta and HTC, and those that plan to launch in the near future, such as Apple.Ro said that Samsung’s new devices will be will be powered by a Qualcomm chip specifically designed to perform better in virtual reality applications and will use an OS provided by Google, he said.

Samsung’s determination to jump into a crowded market may answer the push to expand from traditional smartphones to something more. Nokia, another phone technology company, predicts that metaverse technology will replace smartphones later this decade.

But contrary to this, Ro believes that this new family of devices represents no danger to what smartphones offer today. He states.

Smartphones will continue to build on the features and needs of consumers and offer even newer experiences.

In Roh, there is a convergence of metaverse and smartphones that will complement and build on that experience. Samsung has already invested in several projects in this area, and its involvement with the metaverse is not new.
