Japanese gaming giant Square Enix is preparing to announce more blockchain-based titles in 2023. As part of the now-traditional New Year’s card issued by company CEO Yosuke Matsuda, the executive announced several moves Square Enix will make regarding blockchain technology and also pondered some of the circumstances surrounding blockchain in 2022.
Square Enix reflects on blockchain-related shortcomings in 2022
Blockchain technology has come to play an important role in several entertainment companies around the world. Square Enix, the Japanese game company responsible for franchises such as Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, has announced that it is ready to release several games using this technology during 2023.
The statement came from a New Year’s greetingreleased by Square Enix CEO Yosuke Matsuda, who sees 2022 as the year in which blockchain technology gains greater significance. Matsuda explained that last year may have been the year of integration of decentralized technologies in gaming. He stated.
I think it’s safe to say that blockchain was greatly recognized as a field in 2022, as evidenced by “Web 3.0” becoming a buzzword among business people.
Matsuda recognizes that while blockchain games have certainly been at the forefront of discussions about the fun of gaming, most of this discussion has been heavily focused on the monetization side of the technology. Matsuda said that this is changing, stating that the new vision considers blockchain technology only as a “means to an end.”
More blockchain games are coming
Even with all the problems in the crypto and blockchain ecosystem in 2022, the company is pushing blockchain-related products to market this year, and Matsuda said he believes blockchain gaming will move into a new phase of growth in 2023. In this regard, he declares.
Our group is developing several blockchain games based on our original IP, some of which were announced last year, and we are preparing to announce more titles this year.
However, the executive did not elaborate on any new games that may use blockchain technology this year. The company announced the launch of Symbiogenesis, an NFT-powered interactive experience, in November.
The interest in this area was revealed by Matsuda in November 2021, when he said the company planned to make a “robust entry” into the field as part of its business strategy. Since then, Matsuda has on several occasions helped implement Web3 technology as part of entertainment and gaming, and has even invested in other companies in the Web3 gaming field.
