Elon Musk May Launch Alternative Phones to Compete with Apple and Google
Elon Musk said on Friday that Apple will launch its own phone to compete with the iPhone and Android. Google, which revealed the possibility of launching a smartphone, will unplatform his newly acquired social media company.
Twitter user Liz Wheeler suggested that if Apple and Google launched Twitter from the app stores, Musk should build his own smartphone, stating that “half the country I would gladly ditch the nosy iPhone & Android,” he added. Mr. Musk replied:

Protect users from discrimination, bullying, harassment, and any content users deem offensive in the Apple App Store, Google Play Store, and even smaller app stores like his Amazon Appstore. There are rules for that purpose. They delisted the app for poor content management practices and harmful content. In a letter to Congress last year, Apple said it had removed more than 30,000 apps from its store in 2020 for objectionable content.
Last January, Apple and Google shut down Parler, a free-focused social media app. After the U.S. Capital riots on January 6, the two companies subsequently made significant changes to their apps’ content moderation practices before putting them back on the store with some content excluded.
Many want his Musk to launch a replacement phone
Many welcome the idea of Musk manufacturing a replacement phone. “I will buy this, please do it even if the app is still there,” exclaimed one Twitter user. Another said: There is a huge market for alternatives to Google and Apple. A third user stressed:
If Apple attempted a strike against Twitter like it successfully launched against Parler, hundreds of Millions of users don’t hesitate to ditch their Apple iPhones for alternative models.
Some have warned about the reality of Musk launching an alternative cell phone. One comment said: “There are already dominant predecessors in this space, even Elon Musk,” warned another. Phones rely on components from dozens of vendors. It takes years just to get fab space for processors, TSMC has been reserved for years, and Samsung is far behind the node process.
A third user shared: Encrypted communications&can be paid for, all operating under space law. Imagine blockchain + communications hosted on microservers in space, beyond the reach of governments on Earth.
Additionally, Tesla’s CEO says Apple and Google are taking 15% to 30% reductions from purchases made within apps. From Musk’s plans for $8 a month from Twitter’s verification subscription, which could hurt revenue. On November 18, Musk tweeted:
The duopoly of iOS and Android makes the app store far too expensive. This is a 30% tax hidden on the internet.
Musk recently revealed plans to build his X, an all apps. He said acquiring Twitter would accelerate the creation of X by three to five years for him.
