The city of Curitiba, Brazil, is currently studying the possibility of accepting cryptocurrencies for tax payments. Noemia Rocha, a city councilor in Curitiba, presented this project to the executive to study how the municipality could accept cryptocurrencies for these payments using a third-party payment processor.
Curitiba may accept crypto to pay taxes
More and more municipalities are including crypto as part of their development and tax collection plans. This time, Curitiba, the capital of the Brazilian state of Paraná, is considering accepting cryptocurrency payments for municipal taxes. The architect of the project is city councilor Noemia Rocha, who suggested that the city should consider ways to achieve this with the help of third-party payment companies.
This proposal recognizes the acceptance of crypto in Brazil and encourages Curitiba, considered a Brazilian technology hub, to explore this possibility because of its qualities. Rocha states:
his view on the functionality of this proposal.
Cryptocurrencies have become an immensely popular financial asset in the global economy and are already an alternative form of “currency nationalization,” as seen in the numerous operations conducted through the virtual environment.
Inspired by Rio de Janeiro
Councilor Rocha said that this proposal was inspired by Rio de Janeiro’s progress in this area, having already announced that it would accept this type of municipal tax payment in 2023 She clarified that she was inspired by this. She believes that this would be a good opportunity to update the payment system for these taxes to include this new type of currency.
This bill will be voted on in a symbolic way this coming week, to be confirmed by the mayor of Curitiba to see about its implementation. However, since this bill is presented as a proposal, the executive branch is not obligated to approve it.
Other cities are in the process of accepting cryptocurrencies to pay municipal taxes. One of these is Buenos Aires, which aims to include these payments and a new blockchain-based ID system to simplify the procedures each citizen must complete annually as part of its digitalization drive.
However, Mendoza, an Argentine province, has been accepting tax payments in crypto through a payment provider since August and receives a national currency delivered by this payment company. Currently accepted currencies are stable coins such as USDC, USDC, and DAI.
