Telefonica, one of the largest telecommunications carriers in Spain and Europe, has announced a partnership with chipmaker Qualcomm to co-produce metaverse-related initiatives in announced a partnership. Under the agreement, Telefónica’s telecommunications infrastructure will serve as a platform for the deployment of experiences produced with Qualcomm’s technology.

Named Snapdragon Spaces, the technology is a full-stack program that will allow designers to focus on developing these experiences, especially augmented reality headsets. And because Spaces is a device-independent technology, any metaverse designed using it can run on any headset on the market, including the Meta Quest series of devices. Telefónica will include this technology in initiatives being developed through the Metaverse Hub, a place dedicated to Web3, augmented reality and metaverse initiatives.

Commenting on the partnership and what it means for the company’s future, Daniel Hernandez, Telefónica’s Vice President of Devices&Consumer IoT, said.

XR (Augmented Reality) brings a new dimension to the digital and real world, enabling people to communicate, do business, socialize, and entertain in new ways. We are working toward this future by building infrastructure, upgrading equipment, evolving services, and establishing partnerships to bring innovative new equipment and services to our customers.

Two Brands in the Metaverse

The interest of these two companies in the metaverse and augmented reality technology is not new, as they have been investing and partnering in this area for some time. Cristiano Amon, CEO of Qualcomm, shared his views on the metaverse in May, stating that it represents a tremendous opportunity for the companies involved. The company recently signed an agreement with Meta to develop Metaverse-specific silicon for use in Meta’s upcoming headset products.

Telefonica is also already involved in the Metaverse project. The company has invested an undisclosed amount in Gamium, a Spanish open world, through its open innovation platform, Wayra.
