The South Korean government’s official Youtube channel was the target of a hacking attack on September 3, 2022. The perpetrators successfully broadcast a cryptography-themed video, South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency revealed in a report based on a statement from a Seoul administration official and Google.

Early Saturday morning, a channel on the video-sharing platform appeared to have been hacked, as its name changed to “Spacex Invest.” It also displayed a live broadcast dedicated to cryptocurrencies, including an interview with U.S. business magnate andCEO Elon Musk, founder and CEO of Spacex

A representative from the Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, which is in charge of managing the Youtube account, stated that officials from the ministry were aware of the situation around 6:00 a.m. and immediately took security measures and were able to restore control of the channel at 7:20 a.m.

The main suspicion is that account IDs and passwords were stolen; Youtube’s parent company, Google, confirmed that the channel was hacked, Yonhap added. He also quoted a Google Korea official as saying that the unit is investigating the hacking incident.

Earlier this week, a Youtube account run by the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) was also hacked; the channel, which has over half a million subscribers, was first targeted on Thursday and again the next day and is still unavailable. If we detect any unusual activity, we automatically block access to the account,” he said.

In another recent hacking attack, an anti-government group called “Belarusian Cyber Partisans” attempted to sell the passport of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenkocalled NFT. This hacktivist group raises cryptocurrency to fund its activities against Minsk’s involvement in Russia’s invasion of neighboring Ukraine.
