More Than a Third of Africa’s 53 Million Crypto Owners Are From Nigeria, Study Shows

With an estimated 53 million cryptocurrency owners, the African continent now represents 16.5% of the global total, a study has revealed. The study suggests that Nigeria, with more than 22 million crypto owners, now accounts for more than one-third of the continent’s total holdings.

According to Triple A’s most recent crypto ownership data (18) (19), there are currently an estimated 53 million crypto owners on the African continent. The number of cryptocurrency holders on the African continent is currently estimated at 53 million. This represents approximately 16.5% of the 320 million cryptocurrency holders worldwide. Of the African continent’s crypto holders, Nigeria accounts for more than one-third of the total, or just over 22 million.

Globally, Nigeria has the fourth largest number of crypto owners, while the United States is the top country with 46 million cryptocurrency owners. According to the data, India and Pakistan are the next top countries with 27.4 million and 26.4 million crypto owners, respectively.

Nigeria has the highest internet searches for bitcoin and crypto globally

Nigeria ranks fourth in terms of crypto ownership, but is nevertheless considered a world leader with respect to “the number of people searching for the keywords ‘bitcoin’ and ‘crypto’ on Google.” These findings seem to be corroborated by another survey that suggests that Nigeria is the most obsessed country with cryptocurrencies.

Meanwhile, according to Triple A data, South Africa is the African country with the next largest population of cryptocurrency holders, at 7.7 million. This figure represents about 12.5% of South Africa’s population. Kenya has the third largest population of cryptocurrency holders in Africa, with 6.1 million, or 11.6% of the country’s population.

Completing the top five countries with the most crypto owners in Africa are Eygpt and Tanzania, with 2.37 million and 2.32 million owners, respectively. Seychelles, with an estimated 1,257 crypto owners, is the lowest ranked African country.
