Ethereum Co-Founder Vitalik Buterin Criticizes Corporate Metaverse Attempts — ‘Anything Facebook Creates Now Will Misfire’

On Saturday, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin took to Twitter to express his views on “existing corporate attempts to create a metaverse.” Buterin noted that while a metaverse will happen, he does not believe that current corporate attempts at a metaverse are going anywhere.

Ethereum’s Vitalik Buterin shares his thoughts on existing corporate attempts to metaverse

This past weekend, Vitalik Buterin discussed the metaverse after sharing a tweet from the co-founder of, Dialecticco-founder and blockchain auditor Dean Eigenmann, who said that the metaverse “is currently funded by VCsremarked that he did not think it would “materialize in the way it does.”

Buterin shared Eigenmann’s tweet on Saturday, agreeing with that assessment.

“Metaverse” will happen, but I don’t think existing corporate attempts to intentionally create a metaverse will go anywhere,” Buterinsaid. Twenty-four hours later, Buterin’s tweet about the metaverse is approaching 10,000 likes and nearly 1,500 retweets.

Buterin’s metaverse remarks generated a lot of response, with one individualwriting: “I think the barrier to entry of being a bleeding edge bit of evolving research hardware has created a rare case of a necessary condition in favor of large established companies. Without Quest 2, this idea would not even have been discussed.”

Buterin responded to this specific tweet and shared his perspective.” My criticism goes deeper than “Metaverse Wikipedia will beat Metaverse Encyclopedia Britannica.” Ethereum’s co-founderresponded, “We’re not going to win. It’s just that we don’t really know the definition of ‘metaverse’ yet. It’s too early to know what people actually want. So anything Facebook makes now will malfunction.”

Facebook has directed a lot of energy toward the metaverse concept, even changing its name to Meta long after acquiring the virtual reality company Oculus. Many other companies are also trying to build some sort of metaverse, and the term metaverse has become an overused catchphrase in thousands of press releases and articles.

Corporate executives have tried to address the issue of metaverse, while crypto advocates have said that metaverse will become an “organic community” and “help incorporate other communities.”

So far, it is safe to say that the so-called metaverse is an incomplete mess of virtual worlds, non-fusible tokens, alternative and augmented reality, artificial intelligence, three-dimensional (3D) worlds, and video game concepts. Many individuals, skeptics, andinvestigationshave questionedwhether the metaverse will be a total flop

However, executives from Disney, Microsoft, and Warner have describedhow they plan to address problems in the Metaverse. Ubisoft execs say they think some gamers reject non-fossil tokens (NFTs) because they don’t understand the benefits.

Youtube channelTwitter account Lily’s Showresponded to Buterin’s remarks,: “I completely agree – the real power of the ‘Metaverse’ is in the organic community building. The ecosystem and infrastructure is already here (thanks in many ways to you). I look forward to seeing it flourish over the next few years.”

Another individual responded to Buterin’s tweet, saying.

I have a theory – it is to work with each community to build a simple sandbox style game (high quality and non-web based) initially. The key, I think, is to help bring other communities in, rather than just basing it on your own community.
