Crypto mining infrastructure company Lancium Inc. says it has signed an agreement with Texas battery storage provider Broad Reach Power LLC is, Broad Reach Power plans to provide battery power to Lancium’s 25-megawatt facility in Fort Stockton, allowing Lancium to continue mining without reducing its computing capacity when the grid is swamped by excess energy demand.
Lancium partners with Broad Reach Power – executives say “grid operators are looking for solutions to address the challenges of intermittency”
07/07/2022Lancium, an energy technology and crypto-mining infrastructure companyrevealed a partnership with Houston-based independent power producerBroadreach Power LLC. According to the new agreement, Broadreach, which operates 21 gigawatts (GW) of power from energy storage, wind, and solar, will provide energy for Lancium’s 25 megawatt (MW) Clean Campus data center in Fort Stockton, Texas.
The first phase of the 25 MW facility will be operational this summer, and the Fort Stockton data center will also work with ERCOT services.Bitcoin.com News has learned that at the end of March 2022, bitcoin mining company Cleanspark will expand its operations and reported on Lancium, which has signed a deal with the energy technology and crypto mining company. Shaun ConnellShaun Connell, Lancium’s EVP of power, explained Thursday that grid operators are looking for solutions to curb excessive energy demand.
For example, four days ago, Bitcoin.com News reported that Duke Energy, the second largest energy company in the U.S., is studying bitcoin and demand response programs. On July 5, Lancium’s Connelldiscussed how his company aims to “improve [the] viability of renewable energy resources” through solutions. Connell said in a statement during Thursday’s announcement of the partnership with Broadreach that “as the generation mix evolves and more power is generated from renewable sources, grid operators are seeking solutions to address the challenge of intermittency. “Connell
added.
“Our technology allows data center power consumption to rise and fall with grid conditions, stabilizing the grid and encouraging the development of more renewable generation. We believe that Broadreach’s vision and experience in how to manage dynamic energy storage resources will help support Lancium as it continues its work to increase the reliability and resiliency of the electric grid.
White House to Issue PoW Report – Broadreach Explains “Understanding the Importance of Responsive Generation and Load Resources”
The partnership between Lancium and Broadreach follows the Biden administration’s interest in proof-of-work (PoW) mining projects. Costa Samaras, principal assistant secretary for energy at the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), explained that the White House will soon release a report on the mining sector. He said, “For this type of mining to become part of the financial system, it is important that it is developed responsibly and that total emissions are minimized. When we think about digital assets, it has to be about climate and energy,” Samarassaid
Paul Choi, EVP of Broadreach, said Thursday that the company aims to help the economy transition to cleaner energy use. Choi said, “As one of the largest developers of stand-alone energy storage, Broadreach understands the importance of responsive generation and load resources to help the economy transition to a cleaner power grid.” Concluded the Broad Reach executive, “With our experience managing energy storage, we are uniquely positioned to provide the services needed to power Lancium’s clean campus.”
