Meta, Microsoft, and Others Launch Metaverse Standards Group

Meta, Microsoft, and more than 31 companies have united to form an organization to promote the creation of open standards for metaverse technologies. Named the Metaverse Standards Forum, this body will focus on establishing standards to make every single metaverse on the Internet interoperable, ideally allowing these worlds to communicate.

The Metaverse Standards Forum was born

Although the Metaverse is a loose concept that each company constructs in its own interpretation, some believe that it is important to connect these individual worlds. Thus, companies such as Meta, Microsoft, and Epic games came together to form the Metaverse Standards Forum, an organization created to promote interoperability among these metaverses. According to

launch PR statement:

[this organization] focuses on practical, action-based projects such as implementation prototyping, hackathons, plugfests, open source tooling, etc., to It will accelerate testing and adoption and develop consistent terminology and deployment guidelines.

The forum will not create standards per se, but will serve as a hub for integrating different standards bodies (SDOs) in areas such as VR, graphics, and interaction.

Some see the creation of such a group as expressing a consensus in these companies on the importance of creating an open standard for the metaverse concept. Neil Trevett, president of Khronos, a member of the group, commented on this.

The Metaverse brings together a diverse set of technologies and requires a constellation of interoperability standards created and maintained by a number of standards bodies.

Some key absentees

The group is an open organization and is free to all interested groups, but there are some big names that will not appear. one of the world’s largest interests in VR and augmented reality (AR) technology. Apple, a high-tech company, has yet to join the forum; other important game-based metaverse like Roblox have yet to join.

Experts say that this shows that even if there is an organization that promotes standardization, standardizing a metaverse, or a group of worlds that make up a metaverse, is a difficult task, given the diversity of companies building platforms oriented towards it.
